A city worker lowered the U.S. flag at City Hall to half-staff at about 11 a.m. Monday as the nation observed a moment of silence in memory of the victims of the deadly shootings in Tucson, Ariz.
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., was shot in the head and is in critical condition at a Tucson hospital. Six people including a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl were killed Saturday. Thirteen other people were injured.
Richard Joiner, the city’s head of maintenance, also lowered the flags for Ohio and the city on the Cleveland Avenue SW side of City Hall.
Mayor William J. Healy II ordered city employees to lower the city’s flags to half staff after his staff confirmed that they could do so with the office of Gov. John Kasich, who was sworn in at 12:01 a.m. Healy said by law, cities cannot lower flags without authorization of the governor.
The mayor said the new administration in Columbus had approved the lowering of the flags Monday morning, but for some reason the city did not receive the notice.
Stark County commissioners also held a moment of silence in the commissioners’ meeting room in the Stark County Office Building.
