No matter what you call them, Black Friday and now the witching hours of Thanksgiving have retailers bracing for a much-anticipated sales bump courtesy of early bird holiday shoppers.

Some store openings are concurrent with home turkey carving ceremonies.

“This is our fourth year of opening at midnight,” said Katrina Barton, Westfield Belden Village mall general manager, “and we’re expecting it to be the biggest and busiest ever. We like it because it’s a great way to kick off the holiday season.”

Like every other Kmart across the country, the Harmont Avenue NE store in Plain Township is ready to roll out the red carpet, too. Even earlier. Kmarts are open all day Thanksgiving.

Even so, with some split shifts, Kmart Hard Lines Manager Robin Greene said most employees still will have time to enjoy dinner with family.

“Our shoppers are usually amped up on Black Friday and before,” she said. “We just hope we have what they’re looking for.”
