A Canton man pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to robbing six banks in Ohio and two others in Pennsylvania.

Cleveland-based U.S. District Court Judge James Gwin is scheduled to sentence Benjamin G. Gates, 33, in late January.

Gates robbed banks in Pittsburgh and Erie in June, and continued the spree in northeast Ohio during July and August, targeting bank branches in grocery stores, according to court papers.

Three of the banks were in Stark County, but the last robbery happened Aug. 16 in Cuyahoga Falls.

A witness got the license plate of the getaway vehicle, which was registered to Gates’ girlfriend, and authorities arrested him at her home in the 1200 block of Clarendon Avenue NW.
